Massive Horns Down.
I said going into Week 6 that I didn’t really love the board (and that is somehow when you end up betting the most) but I had a really strong belief in this Texas team and I was willing to risk my whole week on them. I did just that and they let us all down. Quinn Ewers was clearly rattled at the start of the game and his egregious mistakes put Texas in an early hole. For the final three quarters I thought they showed they were the better team but poor coaching from Sark cost them the game.
Running a hurry-up on their final drive to take the lead and then playing prevent on Oklahoma’s drive 100% cost them the game despite being an early hole. I do think that in the Big 12 Championship Game Texas will get their revenge. If they can manage to win out going into that game (Texas Tech and Kansas State both at home are their toughest games so they should be able to) and beat Oklahoma in the rematch then I think they still have a shot to make the CFP.
Regardless, here is where our numbers stand after this week:
CFB Week 6: 8-10-2 -2.93u
CFB YTD: 54-50-3 +2.29u
Based on the fact that we lost 3.2u on the Texas game, it wasn’t too bad of a weekend. If that game didn’t exist it would have been a small winning weekend and if we would have been right about Texas, it would have been a very profitable weekend. So, we took the risk of putting it on the line with one team and that truly did make the difference between losing a couple units and making a couple of units.
Elsewhere, we were robbed of the Taulia cover in Columbus. Maryland did everything they could possibly do to give that game away and we still pushed on the +20. That winner would have been nice but it was not meant to be (again) for the Terps.
LSU overs continue to be a cash machine, Jimbo failed against Saban (again), Georgia finally showed themselves, Michigan continues to dominate shitty teams, Colorado barely survived against another bad team, Miami had the worst loss in HISTORY, and USC also barely survived against another bad team. That is my basic summary of the weekend, and now we are on to Washington Week.
I am famously a South Carolina football fan and have admittedly not been apart of too many huge games. Most of the great moments in my South Carolina fandom have been major upsets like against Georgia twice when I was in school and against Tennessee and Clemson last year. However, those upsets don’t come with the build up to a big game which is almost as fun as the end result. Spending all week thinking about how big of a game is coming up for you is such a cool experience.
It may seem crazy, but this Washington/Oregon game is exactly that for me. You could argue that other than maybe Michigan, no team in the country has been more convincing in their wins this season than Washington. They have the #1 offense in the country and Michael Penix Jr. is the Heisman favorite. There is maybe no team and player (outside of South Carolina) I have invested more emotional support into than Michael Penix and by extension, Washington.
I bet a flier on Penix to win the Heisman last year and did everything I good to push his propaganda and he didn’t make it to New York despite leading the country in passing yards. It was mostly a financial decision at first but I seriously fell in love with this dude along the way. I have not watched a college football player this exciting since Joe Burrow or maybe even Johnny Football. He makes throws that I have rarely ever seen at the college level and their offense is just a bolt of electricity at all times.
Everything has seemingly come together for this team and I think this game against Oregon is their ultimate test. Washington certainly could lose to USC or even Washington State or Oregon State, but I really think they are on a level above those teams, even USC. I think Washington and Oregon are the two clear best teams in this conference and the winner of this game is on a path to make the College Football Playoff. I really think if Washington wins this game, Michael Penix will win the Heisman and this team could be playing for a National Championship. That is how much this game means.
I will have much more on Oregon/Washington later in the week (although take a big fat fucking guess at who I’m betting) and all of the other games but I just couldn’t help myself from spewing about it now. Let’s have a monster week!
