Glen Powell has taken over the world this summer. Lovers of the critically acclaimed film SPY KIDS 3D: GAME OVER have respected Glen’s game for decades now…

However, most of the world was really exposed to Glen after his role in TOP GUN: MAVERICK. He auditioned for the role of Goose’s son but that was given to Miles Teller and Glen was relegated to the role of Hangman. However, many people thought Glen stole the show as the lovable villain in Maverick.

This year, Glen has taken all of that momentum and ran with it like we’ve never seen before. He started off the year co-starring in ANYONE BUT YOU with Sydney Sweeney. All anybody could do was talk about the incredible chemistry they had on their press tour and how Sydney Sweeney might get divorced because she’s in love with Glen. People also loved the movie and said “that’s what rom-coms should be like” and “we don’t make them like that anymore.”

Amazingly, since that release, he has made two better movies and had better chemistry with both of his co-stars. First, it was Linklater’s HIT MAN, which is my 2nd favorite film of the year so far. Glen’s chemistry with co-star Adria Arjona was some of the craziest chemistry I have literally ever seen in a movie.

Finally, we get to the highly-anticipated TWISTERS. I watched back the original, TWISTER, which I had not seen since I was a kid and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it might not hold up but it was an absolute blast and felt like a classic summer blockbuster (PSH stole the show, however).

My appreciation of the original raised my expectations for TWISTERS. It ended up being even better than the original and the most “summer blockbuster” feeling movie since… well… TOP GUN MAVERICK. I will get into my review here shortly,,, but here is more proof that Glen is taking over the world.

Mina Kimes pulling out EVERYBODY WANTS SOME references is bonkers. It is still my favorite performance from Glen Powell to date. Just an absolute classic.

Even his dog has taken over…

Now, let’s get into the movie…

TWISTERS Review: 4/5 Stars

I said it before, but this is what a summer blockbuster should feel like. The action is awesome, the stakes are serious, and the performances are electric. Is the cinematography life-changing? No. Are the performances award-worthy? Not quite. Is it cheesy at points? Sure. But this is what we want from this type of movie!!

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones have fantastic chemistry and manage to do so (controversially) without actually having any physical intimacy in the movie. I’m not a huge fan of Anthony Ramos but I thought he did a really solid job in this movie as well.

Overall, they did a great job of upgrading on almost every aspect of the first movie. The leads were more charismatic, the disaster scenes looked way more realistic (as they should with modern tech), and the actual plot/motives of the characters were much more intriguing to me.

Also, similarly to how the original TWISTER was a perfect encapsulation of the 90s, this movie did a great job of capturing this moment in time. Watching this movie in 2024, you get transplanted into the 90s between the outfits, the technology, the drive-in movie theater, and more. Similarly, I think if someone watches TWISTERS thirty years from now it will be a great time capsule of our time. The cocky vlogging tornado wranglers, the old money cowboy exploiting people that have suffered a tragedy, it’s all perfect.

This is a MUST-SEE in theaters. Movie theaters were invented for movies like this. The excitement and tension are palpable in the crowd and the sound during any scene with a tornado is incredible. Get to a theater to see this while you still can and get ready for whatever Glen does next because I’m sure it will be great.
